When it comes to bed time, there can be no luxury that is not a necessity. Flannel sheets or flannelette fabric provide both the necessity and luxury touch to the living.
Flannel bedding provides for extra softness and warmth and is apt during cold winter. But the right choice of flannel sheet must be made. Bad quality ones are prone to pilling and roughness after a few washes. At the same time, choosing the right design maintains a coordinated look in the room. A general choice of flannel sheet of rating of five to six ounces per yard insures warmth, longevity and durability.
Flannelette is light specifically woven fabric, napped out of cotton, carded wool or worsted yarn. The weft woven across the warp is generally coarser than the warp itself giving it the texture of flannel.
The variety of sheets comes with napping them long or short and either on one side or on both, dying hem in different colors and patterns. The two sided napped weft flannel sheets are called Winceyette. They are woven out of lightweight cotton fabric and the napped wefts are raised only slightly. They are special Scottish style designed sheets and has its name derived from linsey-woolsey (wincey in Scottish) for its ‘plain-woven fabric or coarse twill woven with a woollen weft and plain-woven fabric’ structure.
The history of use of flannel or flannelette dates back to late nineteenth century. Earlier it was majorly a protection of the poor against winter. It was used extensively for night wear, underclothing, dresses, dressing-gowns and shirts. Its uses remain much the same even today except that it is no more a symbol of poor and is used widely among various economy classes. The earlier material of flannel was quite flammable but with the growing demand, a Non-flam titled fabric was invented with fire resistant properties.
Flannelette is demanded throughout the United States and includes Europe. In North America Flannelette is rather known as flannel in North America. The United Kingdom has, however, made it illegal to sell them under the brand flannel.
There are also other types of flannel sheets available in the market. An example is the cotton flannel which is a stout sheet napped in cotton on one side only. It is sold under the name of Canton flannel sheets. Diaper flannel is another cotton fabric sheet material that is napped on both the sides of weft. Its general uses include being a raw material for cloth diapers.
This gives you a general picture of the type of flannel sheets that is currently available in the market. Do give careful consideration in choosing the most suitable one to provide you with a good night sleep.
